The masters listed below are submitted by AUC alumni and provide you as current AUC student with the information they feel you should know if you consider applying for this program.

Advanced Matter and Energy Physics - University of Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
I took all possible physics courses at AUC. The most important ones for my master’s track are: Quantum Physics, Physics of Heat, Electrons Waves & Relativity, Condensed Matter Physics, and basic maths courses, since these align with the courses a normal UvA physics bachelors would have. However, I’d say the more courses you take in the relevant track(s), the better!
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
In masters programs there tend to be people with a range of backgrounds, so as long as you have a good understanding of relevant fundamental material, you should be okay. Also, you’ll be surprised by the relevance of some ‘random’ courses you took! For physics masters, take as many physics (and maths) courses as possible.

Agricultural Sciences - TU Munich

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Not sure, probably general understandung of Earth systems science, math & basic chem/physics (!!) as well as interdisciplinarity itself
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
A strong motivation is probably the most important thing: why this field, what do you want to learn, how does what you’ve learned already lay a solid foundation, especially if you can’t quite fulfill the hard criteria (eg certain number of credits in a given subject). Be realistic! If there are hard criteria that you don’t fulfill, try applying but don’t expect to be accepted. However, agricultural sciences are quite interdisciplinary anyway, so check which university offers the right program for you. They’re not all the same!

Applied Biotechnology - Uppsala University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
math: linear algebra – required cell biology and physiology lab, medicinal chemistry, molecular cell biology, BRMS – basic knowledge is expected
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
application deadlines are early, send in all documents ahead of time

Applied Mathematics - Imperial College London

What problems did you face?
I got rejected from a MSc programme in mathematics by ETH, which makes sense given the mathematics curriculum taught at AUC.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All 300 level math courses, especially PDEs, Prob/stat. More rigour wouldn’t have been bad.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Take courses at UvA if you really want to do math. For the specific Applied Math programme I was ok but I had to make certain curriculum choices because I did not have the right background in more theoretical topics (analysis, measure theory, topology, etc) to choose specific courses.

Applied Physics - Delft University of Technology

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All 100 and 200 level Physics courses, without exception; Solid State Physics & Advanced Electrodynamics (both taken at the National University of Singapore); Nanoscience; Numerical Mathematics
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Try and make an appointment with the program coordinator (Arno Haket) as soon as you are only vaguely interested in doing physics after AUC. The more time you have to choose the right courses (possibly even at the UvA), the better.

Biological Sciences, Limnology and Oceanography - University of Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
The most important requirements for the L&O mastr was to have a biology/ecology related research project (capstone), 1 or more introduction courses into marine science (UvA offers a 300 level bachelor course), and general training in biological sciences during the students bachelor. I found the subjects Ecology, intro to biology, evolution and developmental biology, and molecular cell biology important for the AUC biology track but this is very limited in comparison to a biology bachelor. Therefore I would recommend ecotoxicology and subjects that deal with genetics as well and if access to lab/practicals this is useful and recommendable for any kind of master in biological sciences. In addition to the AUC biology track I followed additional courses at the UvA and during my exchange.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Enrich experiences through following UvA biology courses or use the global exchange program to profit from acces to (marine) biology courses

Biomolecular Sciences - VU Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Courses in the biology track and my internship
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Make sure you follow the courses in the (molecular) biology track and do an internship in a laboratory. Many courses are taught by teachers from the master

Brain & Cognitive Sciences, research master - University of Amsterdam

What problems did you face?
Not all masters are accessible, for some you need a more specific background, but of course that’s part of the deal when you choose AUC.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Extracurricular courses that I followed at the VU University & UvA on Neuroscience & Neuropsychology were imported in getting accepted I think. Important AUC courses would have been all psychology courses, statistics courses and in general the fact that I graudated from AUC and developed a solid academic background at AUC.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
You can contact me, liekevermaat@hotmail.com, or find me on fb.

Climate Studies - Wageningen UR

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
A basic background in an exact science field was expected, but there were surprisingly few actual, formal requirements
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
It is helpful to have followed some courses in the Earth & Environment track at AUC, but it is not difficult to get into this master’s programme if you are motivated.

Climate Change - King's College London

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Environmental Science related courses + maths

Clinical & Psychosocial Epidemiolgy, research master - University of Groningen (RUG)

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Courses in the Cognitive, Biomedical, and Health Science tracks, and statistics (BRMS?).
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
I would recommend AUC students to stay away from this program and opt for a MSc that offers a more quantitive curriculum.

Computational Neuroscience, Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences - Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
I sort of stumbled into this program, which promotes itself as interdisciplinary. It allows a lot of flexibility when it comes to picking a discipline to specialize in, so there are no problems with prerequisites I might have missed. The list of courses I took at AUC may seem a bit random at first, but bearing in mind that I wanted to pursue brain research, the combination of courses really makes sense – doing my Bachelor’s at AUC really allowed me to get a taste of some very different takes on the question ‘what’s our brain computing?’.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Think twice before coming here – it’s not an easy country to live in for someone who’s used to a bureaucracy that works. But it’s pretty well funded (it’s quite easy to get a scholarship big enough to cover cost of living and tuition), and I can highly recommend it for anyone looking to do brain research, whether experimental or theoretical.

Computational Statistics and Machine Learning - University College London

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Linear Algebra (Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra at the time), Calculus 1 and Calculus 2, Probability and Statistics, Machine Learning. The maths basics are extremely important and courses at AUC were not rigorous enough.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Brush up your linear algebra and probability and statistics knowledge. Working knowledge of Python and Matlab also doesn’t hurt.

Energy Management and Sustainability - EPFL, Switzerland

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
As I am enrolled in an engineering degree, physics courses are 100% required, and mathematics (e.g. Statistical Mechanics, Nanoscience, Quantum Physics, Thermodynamics, etc.). General science courses are generally not seen as engineering classes, although an overall high amount of credits in the science track should help with the application.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Focus on courses with technical skills rather than theoretical knowledge, as regular engineering bachelors are filled with them as well, and taking a masters will be hard if you miss these skills. Knowledge you can acquire later and easily look up/study when needed, but skills are essential.

Energy Science - Utrecht University

What problems did you face?
A prerequisite course “Energy Analysis” is required. It, however, can be taken online at Utrecht University.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Physics of heat

Energy Science - Utrecht University

What problems did you face?
Being part of the founding class, not every Dutch university knew what to think of my application, so I had to meet with them, bringing all my course manuals to prove that I had sufficient knowledge
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Calculus, Thermophysics, Quantum Mechanics, Energy Climate and Sustainability I as taught by Ronald Griessen

Environmental Monitoring Modelling and Management - King's College London

What problems did you face?
I had to take the TOEFL even though I was raised in the US as the KCL geography department didn’t recognize my 3 years at AUC as proof of being a fluent English speaker.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
GIS for technical skills and the majority of the environmental science classes for theoretical background. I needed a solid theory background in environmental sciences in order to pursue a more technical master program.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
This MSc gives a good background in technical skills needed in GIS, remote sensing, and modelling, but I was primarily bored during my studies. The assignments are fairly basic and I put in minimal effort the whole year and still passed my MSc with 2:1. There wasn’t anything challenging about this program.

Epidemiology - London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
I really have no clue, I wasn’t the one making the admission decision, obviously
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
believe in yourself, I guess

Global Health - VU Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Public health and statistics

High Energy Physics - ETH Zurich

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Many courses, due to the fact that the program requires a high standard of knowledge. The most important courses would be Electrons, Waves & Relativity and Quantum Physics, but many maths and physics courses (Calculus, Partial Differential Equations, Statistical Mechanics, Symmetries and the Quantum Universe, Astroparticle Physics and Programming Your World) included many concepts needed for this program.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Two tips: do not neglect your mathematics courses and make sure to take at least Numerical Mathematics or Programming Your World.

Integrated Immunology - University of Oxford

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
immunology, the biomed lab course.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
do what you love!

Logic - University of Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Advanced Logic, math courses and Introduction to Modal Logic (which I did at the UvA). There is no specific bachelor/course you have to take for this Masters program. However, I do think it helps to take math/logic courses in advance.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Take extra math/logic courses at the UvA. Like Introduction to Modal Logic, Axiomatic Set Theory (both bachelor courses but also courses from the Master of Logic), and basic algebra courses.

Mathematics and Statistics - University of Melbourne

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All science subjects of the information and mathematics tracks
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Do as many maths courses at auc as possible and also look for maths courses at the UvA or VU or on exchange.

Medical Science, Toxicology - Karolinska Institutet

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Introduction to Ecotoxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, Introduction to Chemistry
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
When I had to do my master thesis project I didn’t get accepted at the bioinformatics institute within the university because I didn’t have any programming experience. Take any opportunity to do Computer Science / programming courses.

Medical program, zijinstroom - Leiden University

What problems did you face?
Some difficultly in getting foreign master programs to recognize the AUC course options.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All medical courses as these attent to best overbridge wat is taught at a regular Dutch medical program.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Look into potential master entry requirements and try and tailor your AUC track to fit those requirements as much as possible.

Medicine, zijinstroom (SUMMA) - Utrecht University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
A minimum amount of ECTS in (bio)medical courses is required
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
The definition of (bio)medical is flexible, so try to apply any course that is in any way relevant for SUMMA (including things like clinical psychology, statistics etc.) to get to this requirement.

Medicine, zijinstroom (SUMMA) - Utrecht University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
human body, metabolic biochem, immunology, cell biology, neuroscience
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
just do the # of biomed courses required and take human body and metabolic biochem to make sure you can pass the exam. No need to take every single biomed course that is offered.

Medicine (SUMMA) - Utrecht University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
The whole Premed track, brms and calculus

Medicine, zijinstroom (SUMMA) - Utrecht University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
If you would like to apply for SUMMA, you have to have earned at least 90 ECTS in (bio)medical sciences, including capstone, internship and theme courses. I attended the following courses that were relevant for SUMMA: Theme course Health and Well-Being 100-level and 300-level, Calculus 1, BRMS 1, Hormones and Homeostasis, Metabolic Biochemistry, Infectious Diseases, Mechanisms of Disease, Human Body I and II. I did my combined internship and capstone at the Academic Medical Centre. I also attended 4 biomedical courses at McGill University (Canada): Systemic Human Anatomy, Drug Action, Mammalian Physiology and Molecular Biology.

Medicine, zijinstroom VUmc - VU Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All pre-med courses, academic English and the Dutch language courses during intensive periods.

Medicine - Newcastle/Durham uni

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All the premed track courses. None in particular but they gave me a good preparation for medicine.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
If you want to study medicine in the UK you have to a UKCAT exam in order to apply for the course. In addition you should consider your application at least a year before because deadlines are in October of the year before starting the program.

Micro and Nanotechnology Enterprise, University of Cambridge

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Can’t really be specific, but it was important to have followed a coherent set of courses to have built up a solid background in a specific field – (applied) physics in my case. Courses in Nanoscience and Condensed Matter Physics came in very useful for my interview. Nevertheless, I believe, the most important part of my application was that I had obtained relevant research/internship experience (at the FOM institute AMOLF in my case) and thus could demonstrate a clear interest in the programme and its contents, as well as some prior knowledge of the field.

Nature, Society, and Environmental Governance - University of Oxford

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Global Environmental Governance, Environmental Law & Policy, System Earth, courses abroad. But there weren’t hard requirements for courses followed that I’m aware of
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Be aware that the programme is very theoretical

Neural & Behavioral Sciences - University of Tuebingen, Germany

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Science major: Cell bio, Neurosciences, Epigenetics, (Bio track) Cognition track minor (Psych, Cognitive Psych, Linguistics, Psycholinguistics)

Neuroscience, PhD fast track - Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich, Graduate School of Systemic Neuroscience

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Practical experience is the most important, which one can often gain in a semester abroad, by taking some UvA courses or doing a hands-on bachelor’s thesis. Other than that they like all courses that are related to the neurosciences.

Neuroscience - King's College London

What problems did you face?
For some of the Masters I applied to, I initially did not fulfill the requirements for having taken specific courses (theoretical as well as lab experience) during my undergrad, so I decided to take two years in between to do internships in the field and gain more relevant practical experiences (lab work).
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
For this specific program, I do not think that there were specific requirements other than a general background in biology and some basic statistics, since the program coordinators make an effort to get an interdisciplinary student body. The most important factor probably was the overall GPA and the work experience I gained after AUC. However, I do wish I had planned my AUC courses more carefully, though it did not necessarily affect me getting into this particular Masters. Most of all, I would advise any student that intends to go into any kind of science to take as many math and statistics as well as lab courses as possible.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
I think AUC equipped me very well for succeeding in this program, especially with general academic writing and the courses Neuroscience, Brain & Cognition and Introduction to Biology. I would recommend anyone applying to a Masters program to try to find AUC alumni who did it before.

Neurosciences, research master - VU Amsterdam

What problems did you face?
Declined at some german universities because they dont understand what liberal arts and sciences is.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Brain and mind, any other psychology course. Also advanced statistics was probably a plus.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
They are quite easy with accepting people from auc. In fact they like the multidisciplinary approach and have some alumnis from UCs.

Neurosciences, research master - VU Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Neurosciences, Brain & Cognition,
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Take cell biology! I did not do that and it would have been very useful to me.

Neuroscience & Cognition - Utrecht University

What problems did you face?
I have looked into psychology masters, but without the diagnostic part of a psychology bachelor you can’t really get into any (except for research masters)
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
I am unsure exactly what courses were important as a research master usually does not have those specific requirements (and this one has no entry test like some masters do). My master is a mix of mostly biomedical and psychology students, so any course in that area was important I assume: the Human Body I and II, Molecular Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Brain & Cognition, Intro to Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Cancer Biology and Treatment
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Take as many neuro-related courses as this is the most important requirement here – many excellent students apply, so at that point they look at your neuro-specific academic background, both to see what your knowledge is and how motivated you are in this area. For example, I have also taken a course in the Psychobiologie bachelor at the UvA (but then you’d have to speak Dutch, unfortunately)

Pharmacology - Leiden University, Utrecht University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All chemistry courses and medical courses were very relevant for my masters
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Make sure that you really do have a strong medical and chemistry background. Switching majors in the second year usually makes it problematic

Particles, Strings, and Cosmology (theoretical particle physics) - Durham University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Calculus, Mechanics, Linear Algebra, Quantum Mechanics, Symmetries in a Quantum Universe, Particle Astrophysics

Pharmaceutical Formulation and Entrepreneurship - University College London

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Immunology, Human Body, Molecular Cell Biology, Cell Biology and Immunology Lab (intensive), because these courses contributed significantly to the scientific knowledge that was required for the pharmaceutical side of this programme.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
If you are thinking of starting your own business in the life science or pharmaceutical area this is your programme. This programme is designed for people who have no knowledge of business so it is specifically for people who already know the science but want to know about business.

Physical Geography and Ecosystem Analysis - Lund University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Environmental/earth science track (esp. GIS)

Psychiatric Epidemiology, research degree - Oxford

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
There were no specific course requirements for my course, but research methods courses and health-related (pub health, epi) courses were a good preparation for the work.

Reproductive and Sexual Health Research - London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
BRMS, Epidemiology, Public Health, Theme Course Health (3rd year)
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
You should have gathered some interships or research experience in a developing country. The more the merier.

Social Cognition - University College London

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
This is an interdisciplinary masters in psychology and neuroscience. Probably my mixture of psychology, sciences (biology, physiology) etc. and international experiences?
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Just go for it! AUC has prepared you really well but beware that the differences in the British system and the need to figure way more things on your own than for British students/those who studied at British unis.

Theoretical Physics - University of Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All physics and math courses.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Take extra quantum mechanics courses at the UvA, it’s worth it!

Theoretical Physics - Uppsala University

What problems did you face?
Difficulty meeting minimum requirements
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
All physics and math courses
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Follow extra physics courses at the UvA
