The masters listed below are submitted by AUC alumni and provide you as current AUC student with the information they feel you should know if you consider applying for this program.

Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition - Unviersity of Oxford

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Introduction to Linguistics and Psycholinguistics (for what turned out to be a very in-depth introduction to the field), statistics (gave me a great head start compared to the rest of the masters students), and Language Acquisition, a course I took during my semester abroad in Toronto (this was one of the reasons I went abroad, to get more linguistics-related credits!)

Comparative Cultural Analysis // Presentation and Preservation of the moving Image - University of Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
ILCT, Cultural Memory Studies, Religion and Violence, Photograph as a socio political Document, Documentary

Creative Writing - Goldsmiths, U of London

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Creative writing course has no academic requirements, but it asks for writing/reading/publishing experience.

Cultural Studies - Goldsmiths London

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Multimedia, Mediated Communication and Games (as taught by Marc Tuters)
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Don’t choose this programme if you’re looking to “specialize” in philosophy/media studies/cultural studies.

English Literature and Culture - University of Amsterdam

What problems did you face?
My tracks at AUC were Literarture and Communication. I applied for a program that was called ‘New media’, but was rejected because they believed I did not have enough credits in communication/media (Leiden University)
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
Introduction to Literary and cultural theory. Postmodernism. Literature and science. All the literature ones I suppose. Perhaps also more cultural ones, such as film history.

Game Studies - University of Amsterdam

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
I’m really not sure. I feel like this master’s program would have accepted anyone with a bachelor’s degree.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
The idea of this program is really cool. However, the academic level is way too low in my opinion; in hindsight I would reconsider applying. My advice: Tag along to one of the classes and see for yourself.

Global History and International Relations - Erasmus University

What problems did you face?
Some master programmes required me to do a pre-master because I did not have enough ECTs in a specific topic
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
The more specific 300 level courses that teach you indepth knowledge
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Go for it! It really suits our LAS-background and the groups are always very diverse and international. You also really get to know your teachers and vice versa and they are very friendly and helpful.

Journalism, Media and Globalisation - Aarhus University and Swansea University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
The requirements for my MA application were rather broad, but since I am specializing in ‘war and conflict reporting’ the conflict and diplomacy courses did help me to enroll.

Philosophy - University of Amsterdam

What problems did you face?
Unclear whether I met the requirements.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
The equivalent of a 60 EC minor Wijsbegeerte.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
No, but I do for AUC: emphasize more the importance of getting certain courses for Masters, and make sure that application committees are familiar with the AUC course structure, that is often more fluid (if not all over the place, in a good way) than regular UvA courses. Make sure that they are aware that the excellence demonstrated at AUC means they are much more flexible to adapt new knowledge than you are trained to at regular courses, and that they don’t get lost in bureaucratic rigid rules.

Redacteur/editor - University of Amsterdam

What problems did you face?
Applied for the same program twice, had to take extra courses after AUC, but still wasn’t accepted since my program wasn’t sufficient.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
None specifically — it was just that I had done such an intens program that really taught me how to write and rewrite. It was helpful that I’d majored in Humanities.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Start editing your fellow students’ work and perhaps apply as an editor to a magazine, or even the AUC magazine to get experienced in editing. But, since this is a Dutch-only master’s program, I don’t think many AUC-students will try to apply.

School of Visual Arts Curatorial Practice

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
art history and critical theory courses

Social and Cultural Analysis - New York University

What problems did you face?
I could not enroll in disciplinary Master’s programs in Germany because I did not have sufficient credits in the discipline.
Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
I don’t know
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
Make sure you spend at least the same amount of time applying for funding. Studying in the US is very expensive and especially MA programs are often not funded. Start early!

Theater Studies - Utrecht University

Which courses at AUC were important for being accepted for this certain master program and why?
AUC does not have the courses required to be accepted into this Masters program. I had to go abroad to get the required prereqisites.
Do you have any other comments for AUC students considering applying for the same program?
It may be possible to get requirements by taking courses at the UVA but it was easier for me to fdo a semester abroad.
